Kim Potter Trial - A message from Superintendent Dr. Baker

Thursday, December 23, 2021

Dear BCCS Parents and Families,

Now that the trial of former Brooklyn Center Police Officer Kim Potter has come to a close, I want to reconnect with you and remind you of BCCS’s commitment to our students, parents and families. You are our greatest priority.

In case you have not heard, the jury in the trial found former officer Potter guilty on both charges.

I know that this case and the verdict will have an impact on our community and will continue to have lasting effects as we move forward. Our district leadership will continue to operate with the safety, security, and well-being of our students, staff, families, and community as our top priority. We will remain dedicated to our mission of standing front and center for everyone in our community.

As I noted in a previous message, my wish is to have peace in our community. In a perfect world, trauma would not be a word that we would need to think about with our children; and yet many of our community’s children have been exposed to more than their share of trauma. There will certainly be those who choose to express their emotions from the trial in a public way through protest and demonstrations, and this is certainly their right. At the same time, we must continue to protect our children and allow our community to serve its people. Peaceful demonstrations and protests can change our community and the world. Disruptive and violent demonstrations bring polarization and further isolate the people who live and work in Brooklyn Center. And let’s continue to think about the children we are able to serve every day - each of them is precious and deserves our love and protection.

We continue to offer a Resource and Support Line that can be reached with calls or texts at 763-200-1201. This resource is here to provide extra support for students and families who need someone to talk to, or other support. There are additional resources to support young people and families on our website. We are dedicated to serving our students and community in all times of need.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the Brooklyn Center community and strength during trying times.

Dr. Carly Baker, Superintendent
