COVID-19 Update – March 15, 2020

Sunday, March 15, 2020

Dear BCCS Families and Community:

This morning, Governor Walz announced that all schools in Minnesota need to be closed by Wednesday, March 18 until at least Friday, March 27 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Starting tomorrow, Monday, March 16 Brooklyn Center Community Schools will be closed to all students through Friday, April 3. All BCCS staff members need to report March 16-17.

On Monday and Tuesday, we will finalize plans for meal distribution so this is up and running by Wednesday, March 18.

Between now and March 27, licensed staff will work to develop standing units of learning that will start after spring break, on Monday, April 6.

We understand it is not ideal for students to have such a lengthy pause to their learning over the next three weeks. We also understand it is challenging for our staff and our families to participate in distance learning for extended periods of time. While the decision has not yet been made, we must plan for the school closure to continue after our spring break ends and for distance learning to take place for several weeks. We will continue to follow the guidance of the Governor and state agencies as we move forward.

The governor has also asked that we continue to offer childcare to elementary-age children of emergency response professionals. If your work is directly related to responding to or caring for patients in a healthcare setting, our Bright Start childcare services will still be available.

Plans are still being developed and we appreciate your patience and flexibility as we navigate these unprecedented times. We will share more information with all staff and the community this afternoon.

As always, we are putting the safety of our children first. Thank you for your support and for being part of the BC community.

Sincerely,

Dr. Carly Baker, superintendent
Brooklyn Center Community Schools
