School board approves 2021-2022 school year calendar
March 11, 2021 – During the work session on Monday, February 22, the BCCS School Board approved the 2021-2022 school year calendar. Each year, a calendar committee meets to plan for the upcoming school year.
“While navigating the pandemic has often been viewed as a problem to solve, we’ve also learned a lot about what works and doesn’t work for our students,” said Superintendent Dr. Carly Baker. “This year’s calendar process reflects some of those key learnings to think differently about how we meet the needs of our students and staff.”
The most notable changes for families will be open houses, the first week of school and the first Friday of each month.
“Our new calendar will allow us to reprioritize and restructure the time we spend with our students,” said Jena Carlson, director of curriculum and instruction. “Because of our new one-to-one technology program, we are able to approach our calendar from a different perspective.”
Typically, staff and families have met for one day before the school year starts during the last week of August. This year, there will be two days, August 30-31, for families to meet their student’s teacher(s).
First week of school
Most school years, the first day of school for students has fallen on the first Tuesday after Labor Day. This year, we will prioritize important school transitions by providing a full-day of orientation for students starting Pre-K, kindergarten, sixth grade and ninth grade on Tuesday, September 7. All other grades will have their first day of school on Wednesday, September 8.
In previous years, professional development days for staff and other non-school days for students have fallen at various points in the month. With the 2021-2022 calendar, the first Friday of the month most months will be an E-learning day for students. Staff will participate in professional learning some months and/or schedule appointments with students who need extra support. Students can expect learning and other academic opportunities to continue on these days. More planning and information about what this looks like for students will be shared next school year.
