Earle Brown Elementary STEAM students learn about compost

July 1, 2019 – Last week, fourth grade students in Earle Brown Elementary STEAM's STEP 21 program learned about compost from Farmer Hana. They gathered organic materials from around the schoolyard to add to the compost bin. Along the way, they discovered a blue robin's egg, caterpillars, butterflies, and even some trash to pick up. The students learned how long these materials take to break down into soil and also how long plastic can take to decompose. Finally, at the end of the lesson, each student was able to harvest something from the garden to share as a tasty snack. Students tried rhubarb, radishes, kale, and Swiss chard. Student report: Rhubarb tastes like sour candy!
