Special services department restructures district, site roles

The special services department will make several changes to its structure for the 2019-2020 school year. Due to budget reductions, the district will move from having two special education coordinators to one coordinator for the district. With this change, some of the coordinator duties will be redistributed to the current administrative assistant, Jennifer Kelly, who will be transitioning into a new role of special services compliance specialist.

Kelly will provide due process coaching, compliance oversight, and assist staff with meeting documentation requirements. Some of her current duties she will maintain include handling special education finance, special enrollments/MARSS, Synergy SE, and processing unique student placements. Third party billing/due process clerk, Brandy Vargas, will take on some of Kelly’s previous duties, such as scheduling language services and management of assessment protocols.

Jen Tousignant will continue in the coordinator role. Because of the redistribution of duties, Tousignant will be able to provide more intentional instructional coaching, while putting focus on service delivery and classroom structure at EBE and BCS. Lindsey Horowitz, director of special services, and Kelly will support Early Childhood Special Education and the Early College Academy.

Kelly and Tousignant will continue to work together on duties such as caseload assignments, student service needs and program placements, and special education student/staff scheduling.
