Frequently Asked Questions
When does construction start at Brooklyn Center Middle and High School STEAM?
Construction will begin in January 2019 and we will need to modify the current building configuration so construction can begin. There will be no school on January 17-18 for students in grades 6-12. Middle school students will remain in the north wing of the building. High school students will be transported to Brown College/Shingle Creek Plaza, 5951 Earle Brown Dr, Brooklyn Center, MN 55430, for part of the day so construction can begin in the west wing of the building. What are we calling the new location?
The new location will be called the BCS south campus because of its proximity to our current building, which will be named the BCS north campus.
When will staff move to the south campus?
Staff will start moving into the south campus in December. They will also take time during the January 17-18 break to move into their new spaces. Classes will begin in the south campus on Wednesday, January 23.
What are the new start and end times?
The school board approved new start and end times during its December 10 regular meeting. School will start at 7:36 a.m. and end at 2:36 p.m. Students who take a bus will have a new pick-up time in the morning. To allow for students at the south campus to be bussed back to north campus at the end of the school day, bus routes in the afternoon will not be affected and will be consistent with first semester routes.

Where will students each breakfast and lunch?
Students will eat breakfast depending on their first hour location and will eat lunch depending on their fourth hour location. There is cafeteria space at the BCS south campus to allow for students to eat food prepared at the high school by our nutrition services team.
Will students still be able to take all of the classes they registered for?
Yes, students will still take all of the classes they registered for this semester. Construction will not disrupt a student from taking any courses, including band, choir, art and other electives.
Voters approved the referendum in November 2017 and plans are underway to begin construction at Brooklyn Center Middle and High School STEAM (BCS) and Earle Brown Elementary STEAM (EBE).
On November 7, 2017, district residents approved two school funding requests to support BCCS students, staff and schools:
Question 1: Increase operating funds to improve classroom instruction, expand teacher training and replace aging buses.
Question 2: Provide construction funds for EBE and BCS to increase and remodel classroom spaces, improve school security, and provide separate entrances and classroom areas for middle school and high school students.
The combined voter-approved funding from both requests will help the school district:
- Improve instruction for all students in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM)
- Expand teacher training to improve academic achievement
- Increase academic opportunities for all students
- Replace aging buses to ensure safe and reliable student transportation
- Add classroom space for our increasing enrollment and growing pre-kindergarten program
- Improve school safety by designing secure building entrances
- Remodel existing classrooms to better support learning in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM)
- Create separate areas for middle school and high school students at BCS
- Address deferred maintenance at EBE and BCS
Renderings of Construction Work
Brooklyn Center Middle and High School STEAM will have an addition in the front entrance that’s more secure.
Brown College/Shingle Creek Plaza Lease
During the Regular Meeting on September 10, 2018, the BCCS School Board approved the lease agreement for Brown College/Shingle Creek Plaza. With construction beginning in January at BCS, we will need to modify the current building configuration. Middle school students will remain in the north wing of the building. High school students will be transported to Shingle Creek Plaza, 5951 Earle Brown Dr, Brooklyn Center, MN 55430, throughout the day so construction can begin in the west wing of the building.
The master schedule is still being built and this will determine what classes will take place at BCS and what classes will take place at the new south campus. Families will be able to provide input on Tuesday, November 20 from 6-7 p.m.
