Board Highlights – December 10 Regular Meeting
The Brooklyn Center Community Schools' School Board held a regular meeting on Monday, December 10, 2018. These are the highlights.
CENTAUR SPIRIT RECOGNITION
Josh Fraser, principal of Brooklyn Center Middle and High School STEAM, recognized counselors Kelli Hillestad and Liz Baumgartner for managing the logistical transition between north and south campuses, adjusting schedules and meeting student needs. Fraser also recognized Randy Koch, retiring principal of EBE, for his service to BC. Koch helped guide Fraser through his transition from assistant principal to principal.
Jessica Richter, director of early learning, recognized Randy Koch for upholding the BC Core Values for many years. Known best for his friendly demeanor and honesty, he has gained respect from families by keeping it REAL and building relationships. He goes above and beyond to help students. He is fair and believes in giving students a fresh start. He helps staff feel valued in many ways by giving a smile, nod, or hello at every turn. He remembers little things that happen in your life and genuinely cares to ask about them later. Mr. Koch believes in people and will always be in your corner. He has made a true difference in people’s lives and will be missed in the Brooklyn Center School District! We will hopefully see him around in his new endeavors!
Tammy Albers, director of human resources, also recognized Randy Koch. Randy brings a great passion to his work and holds his work to a very high standard. Randy has been an instrumental leader in his re-visioning and rebranding of the Brooklyn Center Early College Academy. When the need for a strong leader at Earle Brown was communicated, Randy stepped forward saying, I want to do this. He has, in a short amount of time back at Earle Brown, implemented processes and procedures, built relationships with students, families and staff, and brought new energy and sense of hope to a team that had been feeling deflated. Thanks for all you have done for EBE and BCCS!
Randy Koch, principal of EBE, recognized Jackie Root, administrative assistant, Angel Aguilar Guerrero, family liaison, and Tara Drey, communications specialist, for reminding families to complete and turn in their free and reduced meal applications before the deadline.
Jim Langevin, director of operations, recognized Carrie Donovan, food service manager, and the food service staff for putting on a wonderful senior lunch at EBE last week.
Lindsey Horowitz, director of special services, recognized Debbie Erickson, Jennifer Kish, Jessica Nelson, Dorene Thomas, and Jennifer Levy for helping to ensure we were able to submit our Annual Immunization. The report was successfully submitted with approximately 90 percent completion. Horowitz also recognized BCS principal Josh Fraser and BCS assistant principals Silvy Lafayette and Michael Miller. It has been a pure joy and education collaborating with the administration team. Thank you for always being honest and open!
Michelle Ford, director of data and accountability, recognized Michael Miller for his commitment to our students and their families. The work he’s doing with his team around equity is wonderful and he always asks if our families’ needs are being met.
Jena Carlson, director of curriculum and instruction recognized the district’s English learners team. The team has focused on raising student achievement by critically examining our instructional practices to determine what is working well for students and what can be strengthened through ongoing professional collaboration.
Tara Drey, communications specialist, recognized Dave Paulson, bus driver and custodian at BCS. Will Earley, social studies teacher at BCS, nominated Dave for this month’s Centaur Staff Recognition for living our core values on a daily basis. Dave has been an employee for the district for 22 years and is known for going above and beyond his duties. He continues to show a passion for connecting with students and helping colleagues.
The board took time to recognize outgoing student school board representatives Drew Green and Yamada Yang, retiring EBE principal Randy Koch and retiring school board member Jan Thielsen.
Early College Academy
Constance Robinson, principal of the Early College Academy (ECA), presented information about the ECA. About 19 students attended college visits this fall and 16 students toured manufacturing companies in the area. ECA students Quavon Patton and Shanya McKee presented information about the first student debate on the topic of women in leadership. McKee said she wants to be a lawyer and participating in a debate about a real world problem was a fun and interesting exercise. Patton said it’s helpful for students to educate themselves and have fun at the same time. The next ECA debate is on Wednesday, December 19.
