Board Highlights – September 10 Regular Meeting
Brooklyn Center Community Schools’ School Board met for a regular meeting on Monday, September 10, 2018. These are the highlights.
CENTAUR SPIRIT RECOGNITION
Michelle Ford, director of data and accountability, recognized Constance Robinson, the new principal at the Early College Academy, for already demonstrating and representing our core values. Ford said she feels the passion Robinson has for our students. Ford also recognized Olivia Antilla, STEP 21 coordinator at Earle Brown Elementary STEAM. Antilla is working with the Community Schools team to lead before-and after-school programming to increase student access to programs. She’s also trying to bring in opportunities students, staff and the community are passionate about, including robotics at EBE.
Sara Bratsch, director of finance and technology, recognized Tara Drey, communications specialist, for launching the new website last month.
Josh Fraser, principal at Brooklyn Center Middle and High School STEAM recognized the eighth grade team for redesigning pep fests at the middle school. The first middle school pep fest was last Friday and Fraser recognized the amount of work it took to innovate during the first week of school. He highlighted the work of Caitlin Olson, humanities teacher; Madeline Ryan, English language teacher; and Nasreen Fynewever, dean of students.
Tara Drey, communications specialist, recognized staff members who participated in the Core Values video this summer, including Laura Edwards, kindergarten teacher at EBE; Cheryl Jeffries, Pre-K teacher at EBE; Silvy Lafayette, assistant principal at BCS; Caitlin Olson, humanities teacher at BCS; Ryan Rumpca, Pre-K teacher at EBE; Christine Salokar, teacher at ECA; and Peter Springer, Project Lead the Way teacher at BCS. Chandra Sue-Hughes, psychologist at EBE, recognized Tim Leach, special education teacher, and principal Randy Koch. She said the school climate is calmer, more focused on learning and systematic in how expectations and structures are implemented. Families have been very complimentary of how the school year started.
Jessica Richter, director of early learning, recognized Koch and EBE assistant principals Penny Dupris and Jeff Wilson for already making the school year feel very settled. She also recognized Ashley Peters and Laurie Shepanik for living our core values in their work. Their support with three year olds at the Community Corner makes families feel very supported.
Tammy Albers, director of human resources, recognized the new leaders in the district. Robinson jumped right into her role and was greeting each family at the ECA during Open House. Albers also recognized Dupris and Wilson for hitting the ground running as soon as they were hired. Albers also recognized Helana Crushshon, dean at EBE, for her work at Open House. She noticed that some students were not assigned to a classroom and made a point to connect with each family so they were assigned a class that night.
Randy Koch, principal at EBE, wanted to recognize every person in the district who put forth incredible effort to get the school year started. He’s also impressed with all of the new hires that made the first week a great start.
Nan Yurecko, executive director of teaching and learning, recognized all of the new licensed staff. Many staff members were hired with short turnaround times and their classrooms, offices and instruction were ready on the first day, which contributed to a successful start. Eighty percent of our new teachers submitted comprehensive lesson plans for feedback from the district mentor prior to the first day of learning. Their plans included efforts to build relationships and activities for getting to know students with a strong emphasis on academics and district curriculum.
Board member Jan Thielsen wanted to recognize staff throughout the district for a successful first week of school. She said staff at both buildings felt very upbeat and energy was high. At Open House and on the first day of school, everybody was helping out and greeting families.
Brian Owen, from Gallagher Insurance and Risk Management, presented an overview of Gallagher services. Gallagher serves as a trusted advisor, advocate and guide, helping to develop programs unique to our district’s needs. Gallagher provides day-to-day support, helps minimize risk and navigate through complex regulations, and supports the district’s culture through engagement and well-being initiatives.
Jon Huber, head of Insight School, presented with Insight staff members Jessica Goertzen and Abby Towle about recent Insight successes and upcoming work for this school year. Sophomore Anita Zean also presented about her positive experience with Insight. “The best thing about Insight is the quality of teachers,” Zean said. “They really care and are always so nice and helpful. They always have time for me.” Zean plans to study art and graphic design after graduating from high school.

- Approved the Resolution Calling for a Public Hearing Related to the Abatement
- Approved the Principal Pay and Benefits Guide
- Approved the Miscellaneous Pay Schedule
- Approved the Resolution for the Preliminary Levy Certification
- Approved the Shingle Creek Plaza Lease
