Investing in our Community: The Purchase of 5910 Shingle Creek Parkway

Tuesday, October 25, 2022

Over the past year, Brooklyn Center Community Schools District 286 has been exploring ways to invest money back into the community. For many years, the district has owned and operated two school buildings and rented space for the Early College Academy, Centaur Beginnings Programming, and the District Office.

At a public hearing in July 2022, the school board approved the purchase of 5910 Shingle Creek Parkway. This purchase has given the district the ability to fully own and operate three buildings and continue investing in students’ education without raising homeowner’s taxes.

The district now owns and operates the building and parking lot. The space will soon be home to the district office, ECA, Insight Online Business Offices, Centaur Beginnings, and Enrollment Center. Construction and renovations will begin during the winter.

As the district explored this building option, it saw the opportunity to partner with community entities and invest back into the community. BCCS engaged in a collaborative partnership with the city of Brooklyn Center with the additional square footage of the property going toward the city’s Opportunity Site Project and revitalization efforts of the city’s natural spaces, which will include Three Rivers Parks.

We will continue to provide updates to our community about the city’s efforts and these shared spaces.
