Class of 2020 - Victor Vang
Thursday, June 25, 2020
How many years have you attended school in the district?
What groups, activities or sports have you been involved in at Brooklyn Center High School?
D&D, Science Fair
What is your favorite memory of high school?
Laughing with those I surround myself with and achieving great accomplishments in Band class.
Who is your favorite teacher and why?
Mr. Reed would be my favorite teacher. The reason being is because he took a broken ship and basically rebuilt it with the time he had as a band director. Through those times when I was a student of his, he taught his class the difference between someone who plays music and someone who is a musician. He also taught us how to mentally better ourselves because he saw that a lot of us didn't have it. It's the fun talk that makes us laugh and it's the real talk that makes us realize what's in front of us. Without any of that, BC Band wouldn't have moved anywhere. As someone who enjoys music, that is why I nominate Mr. Reed as my favorite teacher.
Brooklyn Center Community Schools stands front and center for Collaboration, Inclusivity and Unity. What do you stand front and center for?
I like to stand front and center for doing what I think is right, taking the jump, and learning from mistakes.
Why do you love being a Centaur?
Being a Centaur isn't necessarily something that I love or hate. What I do love is surrounding myself with those that make me feel happy and appreciated. Being around these people -- I wouldn't be myself without them because they've helped shape who I am today and that is something I can never forget.
What are your plans after graduation?
College-wise, I'm undecided. However, I do plan to take as many gap years as possible if it means that I have to find myself. Having support from TCF Corp., BCCS staff, and Genesys Works has all been super supportive. I wouldn't even have a road map to begin with if it wasn't for them and for that I'm very thankful.
What advice would you give someone just starting high school?
Be yourself. Don't worry about being on top, the eagerness to be the best, and don't be scared to fail. It's something a lot of us are scared of but if we never fail, we'll never learn. You're young. You have time to grow. It's true that we all have things going on in our lives and sometimes we can't do much about it. Try your best to not give in to depression and if you do, never stay silent about it. Surround yourself around those that make you happy and those that you can be yourself around. There's no need to pretend to be someone else when you can be you. Never suppress yourself to the point where you're oppressed. You have a choice. Do what you think is best.
