What groups, activities, or sports have you been involved in throughout your high school career?
I have enjoyed participating in our Dance class provided here as an elective. I absolutely love sharing my passion for dance through performing for our pep fests and Dance concerts. I have also been a part of BC’s Asian Club. I had a lot of fun connecting with students from different grade levels; we laughed, performed together, and bonded with each other.
What is your favorite memory of high school?
I have lots of favorites, but I would have to say that the most memorable moment would be my first time performing alone at the pep fest. I appreciate Mrs. Stein so much for always pushing me to do my best and to let myself shine even if it’s not on a stage. I remember feeling so nervous to perform in front of the whole school, but once I started dancing I didn’t feel that nervousness anymore; I felt like I was sharing a part of myself with others.
Is there a staff member who has gone beyond for you? If so, who? How have they gone beyond?
There have been a few teachers that have supported me throughout these years at BC. They would be Mrs. Stein, Mrs. Hayden, Ms. Choua, and Ms.Taylor (aka Ms. Perryman). They made me feel comfortable. They acknowledged me for my hard work and helped me when I needed it most. I appreciate them for everything they’ve done for me. Thank you so much for helping me throughout my years here at BC and for helping me prepare for my future.
Brooklyn Center Community Schools stands front and center for Collaboration, Inclusivity and Unity. What do you stand front and center for?
I had always been a shy girl growing up and always felt nervous around people but I loved being a part of a community. As I grew up, I realized that I used dance as a form of bringing people together. I know I talk a bit too much about dance but it’s a big part of my identity and life. Yours might be something totally different; like gaming, being a part of a band, after school sports… anything. I figured that I was the type of person who loved building and uniting people together.
What does it mean to you to be a Centaur?
To me, being a Centaur means someone who always has goals for themselves. Throughout my senior year, I had a lot of doubts in myself and my future. I was afraid of the unknown and I was not confident at all. Luckily I had teachers and friends who helped me realize that if I wanted something I had to make goals for myself. Even if my goals started small, at least I was making progress. This helped me better myself as a human being and as a student of Brooklyn Center High School. As they always say…make it a great day Centaurs!
What are your plans after graduation?
The college I am attending this coming fall is Augsburg University. I plan to find a job and work all summer to be financially stable for college. I want to make my transition to college as smooth as possible. I am hoping that I can join a dance company while attending college. Right now I am still figuring out what career path I wanna take; whether that is dance, business, or engineering. I am still on the look for what I truly want to become in the future. And I know that going to Augsburg will help me figure out who I want to become.
What advice would you give someone just starting high school?
It was quite difficult when I started high school. I didn’t know who I was and who to hang around and that affected me a lot. I would tell students that are just starting high school to surround yourself with people who have the same values as you. Have friends who encourage you and push you to become your best self. Build positive connections with people because these could be people you bring with you into your future. Having friends that appreciate you as you makes high school feel a thousand times better. You can always have fun while being on top of your academics. You just gotta put your mind to it.
