Board Highlights - October 12, 2020

Brooklyn Center Community Schools’ School Board met for a regular meeting on Monday, October 12, 2020. These are the highlights. 

RECOGNITION

Indigenous People’s Day

The board acknowledged Indigenous People’s Day and passed a resolution declaring Columbus Day as not being a holiday. The board read the following statement:

For the past 81 years, Americans have celebrated Columbus Day on the second Monday of October. In August of 2015, lawmakers in St. Paul, Minnesota declared that day was to be Indigenous Peoples’ Day rather than Columbus Day. Abolishing the traditional holiday and replacing it with a day that acknowledges and celebrates the millions of people who were already living here when Christopher Columbus arrived, provides a validation and a correction of a historical wrong that has perpetuated a negative image of American Indian people.

Achievement of Continuing Contract

Thirteen BCCS staff members were recognized for their continuing contracts during the school board meeting. Congratulations to the following staff members and thank you for your commitment to the BCCS community!

PRESENTATIONS

Curriculum Recommendation 

Nayeli Williams and Arianna Conway, student school board representatives, presented a recommended change in curriculum to address racial inequalities in education. Click here to view the presentation from the meeting.

World’s Best Workforce

ACTION ITEMS

Pandemic Sick Leave Policy

Last month, the BCCS school board approved Policy 499: BCCS COVID-19 Supplemental Sick Leave. In order to best respond to the needs of our employees during the COVID-19 pandemic, the district is offering additional paid sick leave to employees who are affected by the virus. Employees may access pandemic leave for their own or for an immediate family member’s illness related to COVID-19. Pandemic leave is for the benefit of eligible employees without regard to salary pay plan and/or funding source. Click here to view Policy 499 on our website. 

The board took action on the following items:

  • Approved continuing contracts for licensed staff members
  • Approved the SRO contract
  • Approved the first and second read of the Policy 105 Equity Resolution
  • Approved calendar changes for October and November. Click here for the changes to our district calendar. 
  • Ratified the bond resolution
  • Approved the first reading of the following revised board policies:
    • 102 Equal Educational Opportunity
    • 413 Harassment and Violence
    • 526 Hazing Prohibition
    • 712 Video Surveillance Other Than on School Buses
    • 721 Uniform Grant Guidance Regarding Federal Revenue
