No additional makeup days scheduled

March 12, 2019 – During last night’s regular meeting, the Brooklyn Center Community Schools’ School Board approved the Memorandum of Understanding between the district and Education Minnesota Brooklyn Center (EMBC). The memorandum states that despite school closures due to weather, our last day of school will remain on Friday, June 7, 2019.

Our district meets the minimum requirements for student-contact days outlined in state statute, however, we fall short of the days outlined in the teacher contract. EMBC and the district have agreed to reduce the number of duty days for teachers for this school year with no reduction in the established pay schedule. This allows the district to have the last day of school on Friday, June 7, 2019 without needing to schedule additional makeup days.

Due to snow and extremely cold weather, school was closed six days in January and February. When the district creates its calendar each year, we build in days to account for weather-related closings. Because there were more weather-related closings than anticipated, we needed to add an additional day to the end of the school year.

The commencement ceremony for graduating seniors will remain on Thursday, June 6, 2019. Teacher grading day will be moved to Monday, June 10, 2019 and summer school will begin on Monday, June 17, 2019. Bright Start child care will be open through Friday, June 7, 2019.

The decision to close school is complex with many factors to consider. We try to stay open whenever possible so we do not interrupt learning while also balancing the importance of student safety. We make the decision to close school when student safety becomes a concern.

Our school board recently approved the calendars for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years. Because of all of the school closures this school year, we have decided to add two additional days at the end of those school years in case we need to makeup any school days due to weather.
