Family Literacy Resources
Learning happens both inside and outside the classroom. Help your child foster a love for reading by supporting their growth and learning at home. Here are some tips and tricks you can try at home! Find additional information and resources below.
Foster a Love for Reading
- Be a Role Model. When your child sees you enjoying a book, it inspires them to do the same! Make reading a shared activity by incorporating it into daily routines—like a bedtime story to unwind at the end of the day.
- Explore Genres Together. Help your child discover what they love by introducing a variety of genres—mystery, fantasy, biographies, or more. Need recommendations? Reach out to their teacher, school librarian, or a public librarian for tailored suggestions.
- Make Waiting Time Reading Time. Transform idle moments into opportunities to read! Instead of reaching for your phone, grab a book. Keep books handy so your child can read during a sibling’s sports practice, at the doctor’s office, or any other waiting situation.
- Connect Stories to Real Life. Tie reading to recent experiences. After a trip to the zoo, explore books about the animals you saw. Planning a vacation? Read about your destination or its history to build excitement and curiosity.
- Incorporate Reading into Activities. Let your child read instructions for a craft, game rules, or a recipe you can cook together. This makes reading practical and interactive.
- Read for an Audience. Encourage your child to share books by reading to a younger sibling, a grandparent, a neighbor, or even a pet. Many children find joy and confidence in sharing stories aloud.
