Walk to School Day - October 7th

You are invited to join Brooklyn Center Community Schools in celebrating International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 7! Walking and biking to school are great ways to get active, connect with our community, and build healthy habits.

  • Brooklyn Center Elementary will celebrate during morning arrival with special activities and encouragement for students.
  • Brooklyn Center Secondary students can participate in our Bus Stop & Walk, getting off the bus at a designated stop and walking together to school.
  • Early College Academy will celebrate during the school day with a transportation-themed activity and a special giveaway.

We look forward to celebrating active transportation across our district!

Looking for more ways to get your student involved in walking to school? Consider signing up "Fire Up Your Feet Fridays" at BCE!
This year, Brooklyn Center Elementary has launched Walking School Bus Fridays, a school-led walking program for students to walk home together after school. Each Friday, students will leave school with adult leaders and follow a set walking route toward home. Students can join us when it works for their family, so no weekly commitment required! Interested in having your child participate? Learn more and sign up using our google form!

As we prepare for these events, it’s a good time to review some pedestrian and bike safety tips. We all play a role in keeping students safe. Even if your student does not walk or bike to school, these tips are helpful to practice and remember in everyday life.

Walk Smart:

  • Practice “stop, look, and listen” with your student before crossing the street.
  • Stay aware and put away distractions, such as phones.
  • When walking on a road without a sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic, so you can see approaching vehicles.

Bike Safe:

  • Always wear a helmet.
  • Be predictable by riding in a straight line and signaling turns by pointing in the direction you are going.
  • Stay alert and ride defensively.

Drive Responsibly:

  • Put away distractions and follow the school zone speed limit.
  • Be alert for students walking and biking, especially around the school during arrival and dismissal. Use the designated pick-up and drop-off line.

Visit the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s pedestrian and bike safety resources for at-home learning activities to help reinforce these tips with your family. Thank you for helping make our school community a safe place for everyone!
