BCS Gym Maintenance Project Finished & Gymnasium Reopened

During the 25-26 school year, the Brooklyn Center Secondary gymnasium floor was undergoing maintenance to address damage caused by heightened levels of moisture in the concrete slab underneath the flooring.

In order to address the issue appropriately, the district worked with engineers, our insurance company, and our vendors to ensure our buildings and student learning spaces were safe for student use. While we worked through this project with student safety and fiscal responsibility in mind, our students, staff, and community showed great resiliency as we found new ways and spaces to hold physical education classes, utilized alternative athletic practice spaces, and partnered with our neighboring districts to host our winter athletic events with as little disruption to our student athletes as possible.

As we celebrated Homecoming on September 26, 2026, BCCS was able to officially reopen the gymnasium and use it as a shared space to celebrate our school pride! Not only were we able to hold our high school pep fest in the gym as a way to ring in Homecoming, we also opened up the space to the community for our annual Centaur Tailgate Party before the Homecoming football game.

"We are super excited to open up this space once again! There has been a lot of history here and we hope to have a brand new era with great things to come," said Arslan Aziz, Principal of Brooklyn Center Secondary, during a short ribbon-cutting ceremony to kick off our Centaur Tailgate Party.

"We are excited to official open this gorgeous new space and return it to our young people. We are ready to go for volleyball and basketball seasons and are extremely excited to see what this year brings for our classroom spaces and athletic teams," shared Dr. Carly Baker, Superintendent of Brooklyn Center Community Schools.
