BCE highlights Ruby Bridges in story walk installation

Brooklyn Center Elementary School honored a historic moment in history this month.

The BCCS Safe Routes to School Program received a grant to celebrate Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. BCE staff decided on a story walk to combine physical activity and literacy, all while honoring the living legacy of Ruby Bridges.

I am Ruby Bridges is written by Ruby Bridges herself and tells the story of her first day attending her new school as the first Black student to attend.

During the story walk installation at BCE from Nov. 10-14, students were invited to come outside and walk along the path as they read the story of the brave Ruby Bridges. Classes also discussed their reflections on the book and engaged in art activities in the media center where students created messages for Ruby or worked on a class friendship bracelet.

This installation was made possible by the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day Mini Grant from the Safe Routes National Partnership.
