BCCS partners with Girls on the Run

Thank you to Girls on the Run for this partnership for our students!

This spring, Brooklyn Center Community Schools partnered with Girls on the Run/the Heart & Sole Foundation. Girls on the Run (GOTR) helps address mental and physical health concerns for girls and helps them build their confidence, develop meaningful relationships, and discover the joy of movement with peers.

This season, the coaches were Ms. Amina Smaller (Head coach), Ms. Yasmin Smaller, and Ms. Aajanae Reese. For a little over two months, the coaches met with middle school students twice a week and worked on self development lessons, exercise, and conditioning to prepare for the 5K run on the State Fairgrounds on June 1. Students paired up with an adult of their choice to be their 5K running buddy. Students had fun and everyone finished the 5k successfully!

GOTR staff were very supportive, and put a lot of effort into preparing the day for all parties involved. They wrote all student participants' names on the state fairgrounds, and during the 5K, students stopped by their names to take pictures. BCS is already registered for Fall 2024.

Our student participants were as follows:

  • Eden Braziel
  • Kaniyah Chambers
  • Aaliyah Cates
