How Reports Work at BCE
Dear Brooklyn Center Elementary Families,
Our elementary students have been busy learning for half of the school year. During conferences, your student’s teacher will be sharing the semester one report card for the 2022-23 school year. The report card has been developed to reflect our district’s mission, vision, and core values. The report card is one way to open communication with you on where your student is academically, their learning progress, and areas to grow. There are a few features of the report card to highlight:
Narrative Focus: Your student’s well-being and learning is our priority. Therefore the focus of the report card is individualized to each student and can be found written in the comments section of the report card. This is the focal point of the report card.
Numerical Grades: Grades are reported with numbers 1 - 4. These are aligned to state academic standards and are based on multiple assessment points throughout the semester. Not every substrand is graded each semester so you may see a few empty boxes. The numerical grading descriptors are:
-
4 - Exceeding - Exceeds the learning standards significantly above what is expected at grade level
-
3 - Meeting - Meets the grade level learning standards on their own
-
2 -Approaching - Making progress toward the learning standard and may need help to be successful
-
1 - Beginning - At the beginning stages of learning the standard
Progress Fields: These sections of the report card describe what skills and content your student has been learning in Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Health. Coming soon will be a portfolio where you will be able to see student work to showcase learning.
English Language Learners and Special Services: If your student has EL services, you will see their progress detailed from their EL teacher. Students receiving specialized services will receive an attachment to the report card describing their learning progress.
Translated report cards are available on the school website or from the family liaison’s office.
Sincerely,
Jena Carlson, Director of Curriculum and Instruction
Keisha Davis, Principal
Katherine Nelson, Elementary Curriculum & Instruction Coordinator
