Meet our School Board Members

  • Cheryl Jechorek, chair

    Cheryl Jechorek

    Term: 2023-2027

How long have you lived in Brooklyn Center?
    I’ve been a resident since 1982.

    What is your profession?
I am a retired early childhood educator.

Why are you passionate about education?
I am passionate about public education because of the opportunities for learning it provides every child, regardless of their socio-economic status.

What is one of your favorite memories with students as a school board member?
I was first elected to the school board in 1991 and have had many opportunities to witness great student behavior. For example, I never enter Brooklyn Center Middle and High School STEAM without a student holding the door open for me. That does not just happen – there obviously are many excellent role models within our staff members and families. Thank you to our students and to those caring adults in their lives!

  • Amy Bailey, vice chair

    Amy Bailey

    Term: 2021-2025

How long have you lived in Brooklyn Center?
I have lived in Brooklyn Center for over 15 years.

    What is your profession?
I work for Allina Health in the corporate business office working with insurance, billing and coding for all ALLINA health hospitals.

Why are you passionate about education?
My passion for education happened because I have three kids currently going through the Brooklyn Center Community Schools system. After volunteering and becoming more involved with the schools over the years, and because of my kids, I began to get to know their friends and families, and it made me start to care about everyone’s well-being and needs while they are at school. I know I have a voice that likes to speak up, so when I realized I could use my voice to help others, it empowered me to want to be on the school board.

What is one of your favorite memories with students as a school board member?
I always have positive experiences with students. Nothing warms my heart more than when I see students I know when I am walking through the hallways and they come up and give me high fives, hugs, or even just a hello and a smile.

    Term: 2021-2025

How long have you lived in Brooklyn Center?
I have lived in Brooklyn Center for 40 years.

    What is your profession?
I am a Project Director/Women Services Lead for the Minnesota Department of Human Services in the Behavioral Health Division.

Why are you passionate about education?
I want to ensure that we are preparing all of our students for success regardless of race, ethnicity, age, gender, religion, sexual preference, income status, or disability in Brooklyn Center changing community and throughout the world. My forefathers fought for us to have a decent education and to be successful. Therefore, I feel compelled to advocate for the rights of all students of these current and future generations.

What is one of your favorite memories with students as a school board member?
As I shook hands with a few high school graduates during this year’s and last year’s graduation ceremonies, I will always remember their big smiles, strong hugs and words of appreciation for me being there in representing the school board.
