  • December 11, 2018 – School board approves new start and end times

The school board approved during its regular meeting on December 10, 2018 to change the start and end times for Brooklyn Center Middle and High School STEAM starting in January. Because students will be shuttled between the current campus (north campus) and the new south campus, the start and end times need to be adjusted. The board approved the new start time be moved to 7:36 a.m. and the end of the school day be moved to 2:36 p.m.

Both the north and south campuses must operate on the same bell schedule. We must release students at 2:36 p.m. to ensure all students at the south campus will be bussed to the north campus by 2:55 p.m. Students at the north campus will transition to an advisory period after sixth hour while students from the south campus are transported to the north campus. Students from both campuses will ride the same busses home. Because busses need to pick-up from two buildings in the afternoon, we needed to adjust our start time to 7:36 a.m. The new start and end times will begin when the south campus opens on Wednesday, January 23, 2019.

Now that the school board has approved the change in times, BCS leadership teams, with student, parent and teacher input, will make decisions to help create conditions that support a productive learning environment.

Before and right after winter break, we will meet with all students during advisory to get final input and perspective. This will help us make final adjustments based on student need. We will also provide students with the semester two schedules so that we can make any final schedule changes before the move.

Families are invited to attend a final input input session regarding the opening of south campus on Monday, January 7, 2019 from 6-7 p.m. in the Media Center. This will help us get final input and perspective from the families we serve. Specifically, we will be discussing the changes to start and end time, drop-off and pick-up and other logistics that will change how we operate as a building.
